Brake Disc Descriptions

Choose from EBC plain non drilled rotors or sport rotors in two choices – wide aperture GD Sport Rotors series for cooler running or new super silent Ultimax USR slotted series. On a global scale Most EBC rotors are made from high quality G3000 castings and 100% of these are precision machined in either the UK or the USA. Rotors are made from high quality grey iron to exacting standards and undergo extensive testing and rigorous quality control and are then precision machined to your chosen slot or dimple pattern.

EBC OE Replacement Discs

OE quality replacement brake discs, precision cast from G3000 iron, surface ground and thermic black coated for corrosion resistance. These discs are runout tested and are an exact replacement for manufacturer discs.

Surely the best aftermarket discs on sale anywhere, EBC Brakes offer OEM quality replacement discs made to the exact same spec as original parts using G3000 grey iron. Thermic black coated to prevent corrosion.

Precision machined, balanced and 100% ONE BY ONE runout inspected to guarantee zero rotor distortion out of the box.

The quality and price point of the EBC Brakes discs combined with the 10,000 mile/6 months unconditional warranty make EBC Brakes a best buy brake part equal to or better than original parts.

Always fit new pads when replacing discs

EBC BSD (Blade Slotted) Disc

Made in the UK, the BSD disc is available for both front and rear fitments. The Uniquely created blade slot design helps to remove hot gases from the braking zone in a quick and efficient way much more so than a uni-directional slot. This helps to keep the pads flatter and the brakes cooler. The function of the multiple overlap slots reduce the brake wind noise.

The initial launch range of blade discs covers 80% of the European vehicle market for sport brakes. Used in conjunction with EBC Greenstuff sport brakes pads or the top selling Redstuff Brake Pads or Highest performing Yellowstuff brake pads range these brake discs are designed to stop faster and run cooler with less thermal distortions plus great looks. The all conquering new EBC Bluestuff NDX brake pads will also work well with these discs.

EBC GD (Grooved & Dimpled) Sport Rotors

The dimple drilled rotor was invented by EBC back in the 90’s and has been imitated by many because of its ability to offer pad degassing without “Through Drilling” disc or rotor holes which has been shown to promote rotor cracks. The wide aperture slots on the EBC units actually draw cool air under the brake pad and rotor interface and help cool the temperatures of the pad contact which can shoot up to well over 1000 degrees at the very heart of the brake pad during heavy braking and can cause brake fade or loss of brake effect. These “Full sweep” slots on the EBC Sport Brake rotor also help remove dirt dust debris and water from the braking area but without doubt the main benefit of such sport rotors is their ability to maintain a flat and parallel pad surface throughout the lifetime of the brake pad set.

Recent European R90 brake safety legislation insists on a very aggressive stress test of all replacement brake rotors. EBC rotors have passed this test and in the case of the GD design, the brakes were shown to run 100 degrees F cooler than non slotted rotors proving our long made claims that the GD version rotors run COOLER.

Direction of Rotation of EBC GD Disc Rotors - EBC GD Sport Rotors are directional “LEFT and RIGHT” which is nearside and offside of your vehicle. The sweeping grooves and spotted pattern should be pointing to the rear of the vehicle.

EBC USR Slotted Brake Rotors - Ultra quiet sport slotted brake rotors

The benefits of degassing and promoting flat and smooth pad wear are a clear plus in favour of sport rotors but the trick is to opt for a matched set of brakes and not to just expect a slotted rotor to improve braking on its own. . When used with higher friction EBC Redstuff, Greenstuff or Yellowstuff brake pads these rotors will deliver better brakes.

The different slot pattern of the EBC USR Series has made this range a popular choice for drivers who desire improved sport braking with minimal air noise from the slots. The finer slot pattern is what makes these sport rotors more silent in operation whilst still offering pad degassing and removing dirt dust water and debris from the braking area.

Manufactured using premium disc blanks mentioned above, the narrower multi slot design of the Ultimax sport rotor and the progressive angle at which the slots are machined creates a quiet running sport rotor that still has benefits of removing gas, dirt, water and debris and maintaining parallel pad wear.

EBC have always been honest enough to say that the biggest advantage of slotted rotors is the fact that they promote flat and parallel pad wear rather than allowing ridges to develop on pads and rotors which is typical of “drilled only” sport rotors. By preventing these ridges brakes stay more consistent throughout pad and rotor wear life (simple physics!).

Brake Pad Descriptions

Greenstuff - Fast Street

Greenstuff™ has once again pushed the performance barriers of organic friction materials. The latest version of Greenstuff™ brake pads are a deliberately softer compound to improve pedal feel on lighter cars at lower speeds. This resulted in a medium dust material with good lifetime and minimal rotor wear.

Tests at the UK MIRA Motor Vehicle Research Institute have shown a version of Greenstuff™ to stop a car almost 20 feet quicker than original parts on a popular hot hatch braking from 60 MPH offering a huge 15% brake improvement.

Key Features of the Greenstuff pad series:

  • EBC medium dust fast street pad with 15% brake improvement
  • Capable of repeated heavy brake use without brake “Fall-Off”
  • Very minimal disc/rotor damage characteristics
  • Superb material for lighter model Asian and European sport compacts
  • ECE R 90 type approved for most cars
  • Features red “brake in’ surface coating for instant safe braking after install

Yellowstuff - Street, Drift & Race

EBC yellows are ECE Brake safety tested which means they must work perfectly from cold at least as good or better than stock pads. When Yellowstuff see some heat (which is not tested for in the ECE R 90 brake safety regulations) they really show their pedigree. On Japanese cars built with lower friction FF rated pads these deliver a full grade higher stopping and on German cars built with GG these are about the only aftermarket pads that will match or beat the pretty good German OE spec pads and that takes some doing. High efficiency performance and race brakes for track & street use, fast to bed-in, great for street vehicle brake upgrade. Not only a high friction pad but very resistant to heat and loads of heavy braking means that yellowstuff has been used with great success in race cars and on high speed Police Vehicle brakes alike. EBC Yellowstuff pads are used on the UK Silverstone Race Track Drivers experience cars because of their high performance and longevity. Yellowstuff also claimed a win in the Targa rally and for two years running in the Brazil Mitsubishi off Road Team Desert Challenge. Because of its huge heat range, the applications where EBC Yellowstuff will deliver benefits range from fastest street use on higher horsepower cars and race use on most street based cars and even as a brake upgrade on Trucks and SUV.

Key Features of the Yellowstuff pad series:

  • High friction formula improves brake effect 15%.
  • Fastest brake pads for Street, Drift & Race
  • Zero brake fade makes this material perfect for fastest driving
  • Capable of repeated heavy brake use without brake “Fall-Off”
  • Very minimal disc/rotor damage characteristics
  • Suitable for shorter track events and race use
  • Medium hardness material feels good at pedal
  • If all you need is stopping power, this is the material choice
  • ECE R 90 type approved for most cars
  • Features red “brake in’ surface coating for instant safe braking after install

Bluestuff NDX - Super-Street & Trackday

Bluestuff NDX is a high friction sport and race material that now has R90 approval on some fitments for the EU. For USA and Asia markets where R90 does not apply, this compound is totally road safe and the perfect choice for performance vehicles driven hard on the road or trackdays.

Bluestuff NDX is an intermediate grade trackday and race pad making it the material of choice for many club level racers and serious trackday enthusiasts. However, due to Bluestuff having excellent cold friction and being very controllable, this compound has quickly become the brake pad of choice for performance road car drivers in USA and Asia markets where R90 homologation does not apply. More recently, EBC are pleased to announce that Bluestuff has passed extensive road focused testing and gained R90 approval on some E.U. fitments, making it unique in being the first truly track focused pad which is also perfectly legal for use on the public roads across Europe. There is no requirement for E.U. customers to inform their insurance company following fitment of R90 approved pads.

For customers with experience of EBC’s widely acclaimed Yellowstuff material, Bluestuff boasts a similar friction profile but with a usefully higher friction coefficient across the now larger working range, feeling much like you’d imagine Yellowstuff to feel after a double hit of espresso. Bluestuff has a high friction coefficient without feeling grabby, taking things up a notch from EBC’s Yellowstuff material by bringing superb pedal modulation to a track pad with even greater fade resistance.

However, being a track focused material, customers may experience a noticeable increase in both brake dust and brake noise. As is often the case with friction materials, an increase in ultimate performance is often met by an increase in noise and dust.

For customers seeking the ultimate road/track pad with even greater levels of performance, check out EBC’s range of EBC Orangestuff grade full race pads which deliver faster bed in and higher temperature fade resistance.

As with all brake pads, selection involves a trade off with life and disc/rotor wear and EBC have chosen with both the Bluestuff and Orangestuff grade race pads to offer a pad that is the replaceable item rather than the disc or rotor. EBC’s track and race materials are exceptionally kind on brake discs, making them especially desirable for modern performance cars that feature complex and hugely expensive 2-piece brake disc systems from the factory. Customers report that EBC track and race pads are far kinder to brake discs than comparable granite like semi-metallic pads, which may last longer but take the rotors with them.

Key Features of the Bluestuff pad series:

  • Fast street, trackday and shorter race use high friction material
  • R90 approved street legal due to excellent bite from cold
  • Wide aperture grooves for better venting
  • Surface pre-scorched to reduce bed-in time although several steady laps or 100 miles street driving are advised before loading pads to maximum

Redstuff Ceramic Brake Pads - EBC Brakes' lowest dust premium street sport brake pad material for cars above 200bhp

As EBC’s flagship street brake pad material for prestige and faster cars, EBC Redstuff ceramic Brake pads sets new standards in brake performance. Redstuff ceramic brake pads have always been known for its low dust ability but the latest blend has greatly reduced the phenomenon of pad “Pick up” or disc scoring and reduced dust even further. Tested at the UK Motor Industries Research Association (MIRA) in witnessed tests early Redstuff reduced car stopping distance in tests by almost 50 feet from 100 MPH offering a staggering 30% brake improvement.

Redstuff brake pads are however as a harder compound does take longer to fully bed in to achieve its highest levels of performance (can be up to 1000 miles/1600 Kms urban use) during which time the odd “Chirp” of brake noise may be heard when starting from cold in damp and cold conditions at walking pace speed. One press of the pedal to clear the rotor of any dampness and this disappears to leave EBC Redstuff a pad that inspires confidence in all cars. The motto is be patient give the pads a full chance to bed down. Redstuff is only available for heavier and faster cars and does find its self at its best on slightly heavier cars. Selecting the right grade of EBC brake pad for you car is important and you can see the entire EBC selection and how to choose the right brakes for your car by switching to this linked page. Brake dust has been rated by many OEM builders to be a more serious source of complaints than even brake squeal and as such EBC Brakes is proud to bring you with this new EBC Redstuff blend what is probably a world first in a pad that is almost dust free yet delivers performance braking. Less dust also means less rotor wear and it is almost guaranteed that your rotors will last double as long as when used with the more abrasive steel fibre brake compounds used by almost all of our competition. EBC Redstuff should be used at both front and rear for optimum balanced brake performance.

Key Features of the Redstuff pad series:

  • Mid-level street upgrade for higher powered hatchbacks, saloons and estates
  • High friction formula improves brake effect 15%.
  • Redstuff ceramic brake pads, passenger car/saloon car pad NOT made for Truck or SUV fitments
  • EBC lowest dust fast street pad with 15% brake improvement
  • Capable of repeated heavy brake use without brake “Fall-Off”
  • Very minimal disc/rotor damage characteristics
  • Superb material for Prestige imports/European and Asian cars
  • ECE R 90 type approved for most cars
  • Features red “brake in’ surface coating for instant safe braking after install

Orangestuff full race brake pads - Track and race pads for cars below 250bhp in shorter races

Following on from the huge success of the new EBC Bluestuff NDX range, customer demand has indicated the need for a more aggressive full race material for track only use that is not required to bring a vehicle to rest (which Bluestuff NDX was specifically designed to do) and this has led to the development of the orange grade material. The material will be dusty and slightly more aggressive on brake rotors (such as EBC Blade Brake Disc rotors) which is the trade off when using a full race pad and cannot be avoided. If you wish to drive your car to the track and race it, you cannot use Orangestuff. It is not European street legal or safe and likely never will be ECE R 90 street legal . Even in countries where there is no such consideration of ECE R 90 (a European brake safety regulation) Orange grade is NOT designed for highway style driving and is more designed to scrub off speed on track use. Orange is a track only material. On the contrary Bluestuff is a material capable of track use on most vehicles. The different in the compounds is immense. Bluestuff may work great on better designed calipers on the track but the fastest cars on Street design calipers may push blue beyond its limits due to reduced cooling, reduced pad release and smaller rotor diameters associated with a standard set up.

Key Features of the Orangestuff pad series:

  • Fast bed in due to factory pre-scorched surfaces
  • Huge friction level
  • Stable at highest temperatures
  • Reduced rotor/disc damage
  • Effective from cold making this material street usable
  • Not EU street legal
